What was your first job and how much were you paid?
Don’t laugh, my first job was flipping burgers in McDonalds for about £3 (old punts) an hour. My first job in business was working for a company called “Double Z Productions”. Wow, what a great time I had there working with Zig and Zag, Podge and Rodge, Dustin the Turkey and don’t forget Socky!
Did you have a mentor?
My Dad, he was hard working, kind and generous and never took life too serious. He always used to remind me “there is a solution for everything in life”.
How did your career path lead you to founding the Marketing Room?
After spending over 20 years working in some amazing and dynamic companies in Ireland and abroad, one day I asked myself a question: what could help to grow and support indigenous business in Ireland which is the backbone to the economy? The answer I came up with was creating a service that gave SMEs access to specialist marketing focused on their business for a competitive price.

Does the glass ceiling exist for women?
No, all you have to do is look around at the growing positive trends of women in business. There are more women in senior management roles and on board of directors of major businesses than there has ever been. In my opinion, the world is becoming more gender neutral and there are huge opportunities for women in business in the future.
What’s the most important lesson you have learnt over the course of your career?
Nothing comes easy! Success takes focus, hard work and commitment.
What qualities do you need to have to start a business and what advice would you give to someone starting out?
All business starts with an idea or a basic concept. Whether it flies or falls depends on the right mix of confidence, hard work, perseverance and most of all a large dose of common sense.
What motivates you?
I strongly believe in self-motivation through a results orientation on life. The secret to motivation is to surround yourself in positive influencers in your life whether that be in work or at home. My family are my most amazing and loyal supporters and motivate me every day to achieve my goals and my client’s goals.
Are you able to maintain a work/life balance?
Yes, by following some simple everyday principles of life you can have a successful and fruitful career and enjoy the special things in life like family, friends and shopping!! The principles I apply are (1) keep it simple (2) work SMART and (3) be positive.
