Businesswoman of the Week: Valerie O Shea – Designer at Valecia Fashion
Valerie O’Shea is a 25-year-old Fashion designer at Valecia Fashion from Glengarriff, Co Cork…….
Where did it all begin?
I think that a love for design is something that runs in my family. My mother and grandmother would have been big into it when they were younger, making outfits for all of their sisters and neighbours. For me, it all started when I was very young and I would wrap tissue around my Barbies to make dresses for them!
What sets Valecia apart from other labels?
My stuff is very wearable, yet it has a little edge to it. People have said to me that they saw a piece and knew that it was a Valecia, so I think I have a definitive style. It’s quite feminine, but with a little bit of a twist.
What has been your biggest challenge?
I work full time in Debenhams on visual display and I design in my spare time, so the challenge is trying to find enough time to do both. I’m not at a stage yet where I can cut back on my hours, so it’s trying to get a happy medium between having the time and the energy to design, as well as the finances to support it.
That must take a lot of motivation – Where does it stem from?
My motivation comes from people’s positive reactions to my designs. It’s a buzz to know that you are doing something right and people are liking the stuff that you create. As well as that, seeing my ideas come to life is a big motivation for me.
What is the best business advice you can offer?
My best advice would be to never give up on your dream. Sometimes it can take a lot of motivation to start something, but once I get going it’s full steam ahead!
What do you love most about your work?
I love all of it really, but my favourite part would probably be choosing all of the fabrics.
What’s the dream?
I always thought that I’d love to do wedding dresses, but then when you see the amount of time and work that goes into it, the reality sinks in. I’d love to be able to design full time. I have my stuff in Om Diva at the moment, so that’s amazing. I would like to have it in a few different places, especially somewhere in Cork since that’s where I’m from.
