Heartbreak as Mayo Football Hero Passes Away Aged Just 49
An ex-Mayo GAA star has sadly passed away aged just 49.
Greg Maher played as a forward in the 1989 All-Ireland final Mayo team.
He passed away in the early hours of yesterday morning after a long illness, according to the Independent.ie
Greg was a member of the Mayo team that reached a first All-Ireland final in 38 years.
He played as a wing forward on the team that lost the 1989 decider to Cork.
Maher, an All-Ireland minor champion with his county in 1985, lined out in the senior final four years later alongside his brother Sean, who played in midfield that day.
The death will no doubt be a blow to the Mayo team ahead of tomorrow’s championship final.
Mayo will look to end their All-Ireland final drought after 65 years, as they take on Dublin in Croke Park.
