Holly Willoughby was outraged on ‘This Morning’ when a guest suggested that some women who’ve been raped are ‘to blame’ by saying that they increase their own vulnerability by wearing short skirts or ‘dressing provocatively’.
They were talking on the show about how one third of women think women are to blame for sexual assault if they are wearing revealing clothes or have consumed too much alcohol.
Guest, and journalist Angela Epstein, said that you increase a level of personal responsibility if you put yourself in a situation where that element of vulnerability might be heightened, using the comparison that she doesn’t leave her house door open to avoid being robbed.
Philip was shocked at her comments, saying it sounded as though she was saying that women were to blame.
Angela Epstein said she was not saying they were to blame but that they needed to think about their surroundings.
This made Holly very frustrated as she quizzed Epstein as to what was a “safe environment” for women to wear short skirts in.
People took to Twitter to also show their disgust for the comments.
women in jumpers winter coats and wellies get raped while walking there dog. A short skirt & alcohol makes no difference. #ThisMorning.

#thismorning You aren’t inviting rape because you are wearing a short skirt and getting drunk. Disgusting that women would be blamed!

don’t think a rapists decision when waiting a dark alley is “I won’t rape her, she’s wearing leggings, not a short skirt” 🙄 #thismorning

We can’t believe she made those comments. People were furious, and we can see why.
