Leading Women in Business: Tara Donoghue Photography
Based just outside Killarney, Co. Kerry, Tara Donoghue Photography began making a visual impression seven years ago. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength with Tara only recently returning from shooting a wedding in Sydney, Australia!
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
I have always loved art, looking at and creating beautiful imagery is something that makes me happy. I see it daily with my four-year-old son who takes such pride in what others would see as a “scribble”. It is that power of an image that inspires me. How one image can evoke a particular memory in their lives, which takes them right back to that moment. For me, being able to record that and give that to a client is what motivates me daily and is why I love my work so much.
BIGGEST CHALLENGES FACED
Time management! Being self employed you have to be everything rolled into one! A receptionist, an accountant, photographer, editor, counsellor (as it can be a very emotional time for some!), marketing expert, social media expert, etc. 2015 was our busiest year yet, so my husband Dave, who has always helped in the background from day one, officially joined the business and I have also got a fantastic marketing guru to take some of the pressure off!
Realising that you are not superwoman, and that it is okay to ask others to help in your business was a huge but very positive step for me!
BUSINESS HOPES FOR 2016
We are planning to do more work in promoting our studio for maternity/babies/ family shoots as we are already taking wedding bookings for 2017, so that side of our business is booming, thankfully. As the goal has always been about story telling and building long term relationships with our clients, we plan to photograph couples both before and after the wedding as the family unit grows. We have also begun teaching photography workshops and we have lots of exciting plans to develop this area in 2016.
ADVICE FOR ASPIRING BUSINESS WOMEN
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and put yourself out there; the worst that can happen is that the answer is no. If you asked me last year would I be heading off to Sydney to shoot a wedding this year, I honestly would have laughed at you! Hard work and determination ultimately pays off – and sometimes dreams do come true!
