Poor Pixie Lott! She dared to go out to the premiere of Dark Knight Rises with a tiny bit of underarm stubble showing and the media gave her a hard time, with close up pictures of her armpit splashed everywhere. We at RSVP felt sorry for her. After all, it wasn’t like she did a Julia Roberts at the premiere of Notting Hill job…..
Or even Dublin girl Emer O’Toole, who allowed her body hair to grow out for 18 months.
The 21-year-old singer doesn’t normally attract criticism from the press as she rarely puts a foot wrong in the style stakes. Apart from the unfortunate armpit incident, which she later tweeted was due to being between waxes, she looked stunning in an aquamarine halterneck dress, and she has her own clothing line with Lipsy. She is regularly snapped with her boyfriend, model Oliver Cheshire, and both always look effortlessly cool.
And just to prove how sorted she is when it comes to fashion, here we present an interview we did with Pixie recently in RSVP, where she revealed to us that this isn’t the first time she has had a “wardrobe malfunction!”
My Style – Pixie Lott
As one of the hottest pop stars on the music scene, Pixie Lott, aka Victoria Louise Lott, 21, has become known for her innate sense of style. Following the release of her second album, Young, Foolish, Happy, she spoke to RSVP about having her own clothing range, dealing with “cheeky” wardrobe malfunctions, and sitting next to Cheryl Cole on The X Factor judging panel.
How would you describe your style Pixie?
It kind of depends on how I feel so it’s a real mix. Sometimes I feel more classic and chic and I also love vintage stores, and I love designers and like lots of current stuff.
What is your favourite item of clothing that you have ever owned?
It’s a white silky mini-dress with the back cut out that my mum used to wear. She wore it when she was my age but I own it now.
How do you like to dress for performing?
I like to wear something I’m comfortable in and can move around in, and something that won’t ride up too much on stage!
Have you ever had any wardrobe malfunctions on stage?
Oh my God, I was performing at the Michael Jackson tribute concert a few months ago, and I always have these little disco pants on that I’ve worn loads of times on stage without any problems. I wore them under a really short, silver dress, and I was doing this kind of ballet dance with leaps and stuff, and it must have been the reason why the shorts rode up so much. So in the next number, the shorts had ridden up too much and I didn’t realise it, but in the pictures you can see that my cheeks are definitely visible.
How did your collaboration with Lipsy come about?
The opportunity came up two years ago when I released Mama Do. They asked me if I would like to do my own line of clothing and I was really happy, as what girl would say no to that? We started having planning and design meetings and collaborated on the collections, and the fourth one is out now for autumn/winter.
Describe the range of clothes?
It’s dresses, blouses, and shorts – kind of a mixture of things really, and it covers a wide range of ages and sizes.
Do you use the services of a stylist?
Yes because I often don’t have the time to go shopping because I’m so busy. I work with Katie Clark and Polly Judge from KP Stylists, so they bring in rails of clothes and I pick out my favourites.
What are your three wardrobe staples?
Hot pants and shorts, definitely, because I wear them in the summer and then in the winter over tights. I have lots of little black dresses because I love them, and I think you always need to have a really good coat, like a trench coat.
Being glamorous is part of your job description as a pop star. Do you always make an effort to look your best no matter where you are going or what you are doing?
Sometimes I do, but if I don’t have to get glammed up then I usually don’t.
Which female celebrity do you think is always on-trend with her sense of style?
I really like Sienna Miller because I think she has lovely dresses and I like the way she puts outfits together. She’s really beautiful as well and her hair is kind of a bit dishevelled, which I like.
You filled in for Dannii Minogue on The X Factor judging panel in 2010. Was it intimidating sitting next to Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell?
Yes I was thinking, “What the hell am I doing here?” But they were so friendly and they made me feel so at home and we had a laugh. It was a different situation for me because I’d never experienced that side of a judging panel before – I’d always grown up on the other side, going for auditions and stuff.
What three items of make up could you not do without?
I love my eyeliners. My favourite is one from MAC called Smolder, because it has a really good, strong pigment. I love Max Factor mascaras, and I love the foundations from DuWop as they’re kind of dewy and not too heavy. I love moisturisers from Nubo skincare, which are lovely.
Who are your style icons?
Hmmm I’d go for Edie Sedgwick and Brigitte Bardot, and I like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe as well.
Do you ever experience any insecurity when it comes to your body or your image?
No because I think it’s good to be comfortable in your body no matter what age you are. I think you should just love life and embrace the skin you’re in.
How do you keep your figure?
I think it’s just because I’m so busy doing random things all of the time. I like to go running but I don’t really have that much time – although I run from airport terminals a lot! I still eat whatever I want but I like salads and things like that.
What key trend from this season’s collections appeals the most to your fashion taste buds?
I like the androgynous thing, where girls can wear brogues and ties and shirts. I don’t like to be too girlie, although I love girlie things. I also love the metallic thing that’s in now.
Are you a designer diva or a high-street honey?
I like both and enjoy mixing things up, but if I had to choose one it would be designer. If I could pick any designer to dress me for a red carpet event, it would it be Chanel because their designs are pretty chic and classic.
What would be your idea of a perfect evening?
My friends would all come to the house and we’d do each other’s make up, put on eyelashes, do each other’s hair and all that kind of thing. Then we’d go out to dinner and on to a party.
If you could invite three guests of your choice to a dinner party, who would you ask and why?
Marilyn Monroe, because she’s one of my icons, Mariah Carey, because I’ve always listened to her stuff and although I met her once, I’d like to get to know her properly. And Cameron Diaz, because she seems really funny.
