What sparked the idea for your business?

Firstly, CWM Wealth Management is a financial advisory service which was set up eight years ago in conjunction with Contracting PLUS. It was through the course of my work with CWM and having conducted a recent survey that we identified huge gaps in the financial plans of self-employed professional females in Ireland. The most alarming findings were that almost 50% of those females surveyed do not have a pension plan in place. Only 20% have appropriate income protection cover meaning that they would become incomeless in the event of illness of injury preventing them from being able to work. This led us to start up a new dedicated service called HerMoney which offers advice to self-employed professional women.

What is the most difficult aspect of running your own business?

A big challenge is realising that your responsibilities as a business owner now apply around the clock, 365 days per year. In starting your own business, it can be difficult to switch gears to take on marketing, branding, financial management, HR and all the other duties.

What has been the biggest lesson?

Learning that mistakes will not end your business. You need to be willing to listen to constructive criticism as this will help you to learn. In my experience, there have been times, especially early on, when I encountered issues that appeared to be insurmountable but with persistence, patience and resolve, you learn to overcome such obstacles. Each day in a new business is like a roller coaster filled with ups, downs, thrills, and unexpected turns.

What is the plan for 2017 and going forward?

To make CWM Wealth Management and HerMoney the number one financial advisory service for self-employed professionals in Ireland and to support Irish people in becoming more financially savvy!
