VOX POP: ‘Daddy’s Girls’ with Holly and Karl Carpenter

He’s our first love, the person who has our back no matter what obstacles life throws at us over the years. So with Fathers’ Day fast approaching, there’s no better time to show our daddy how great he is. We caught up with some famous faces to hear about their father/daughter relationship, what makes their bond so strong and whether they share any similar traits…

Holly on Karl:

How would you describe your dad in five words?

Caring, thoughtful, funny, generous and mad!

What is his most typical or most embarrassing phrase?

Whenever I do something stupid or if someone misses a penalty when he’s watching football, he shouts, “Ah ye feckin’ eejit ye!” His other phrase is “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail” which is annoying, but true!

Has he been a support for your career?

Dad has been a big support in my career. He did some modelling when he was younger and I remember him giving me tips when I entered a model search competition at 15. He always keeps me grounded and reminds me that other people’s opinions don’t matter as long as I’m happy.

Does he have any bad habits that you would love to change or any bug bears?

Whenever I have friends over he always insists on showing them “funny” videos of dogs on YouTube. It’s embarrassing especially when they take ages to load and he’s like, “You HAVE to see this pug dancing!”

What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned from him?

Dad taught me to stick up for myself and never let myself get talked into doing anything I wasn’t comfortable with, which has been great when it comes to work.

What would you like to pass on to your own kids some day?

I know I can always rely on my dad and he’s always there for me no matter what. I would love if my kids felt like that about me one day; it must be an amazing feeling to know you’re someone’s rock.

Karl on Holly:

Do you see much of yourself in

Holly?

Yes, she is fun-loving, loyal and very outgoing.

Would you say that you are a protective father?

Yes, but she’s a young woman now, so she’s more equipped to make her own decisions.

Is it hard to see her working in a such a tough industry?

Sometimes, but she can look after herself.

Do you have any pet names for her?

Holly Horror Head!

What are your hopes for Holly in the future?

I hope that she is happy in whatever she does and that she enjoys a good family life as I have had.
