A man has died after apparently falling from a roof while attempting to make repairs to damage caused by Hurricane Ophelia.

The man in his 50s suffered critical fatal head injuries when he fell while working on a shed roof at Kilgarriff outside Clonakilty in west Cork, reports Independent.ie.

It is understood he was using a teleporter machine when the accident occurred shortly before 2pm.

Emergency services were immediately notified but, despite desperate efforts to stabilise the man's condition, he was pronounced dead before he could be rushed to hospital.

The accident is being treated as a freak tragedy.

Three people died during Hurricane Ophelia, all in tree-related accidents.
