An East Galway community is reeling following the death of a father and son
An East Galway community is reeling following the death of a father and son this week.
Peter Killeen and his son Thomas died within a day of each other in Colmanstown, Ballinasloe.
They were laid to rest yesterday afternoon at Cloonkeenkerrill Cemetery following their funeral Mass at St Michael’s Church in Gurteen.
“Peter died on Wednesday evening following a heart attack and then the following day his son Thomas, who was in his forties, passed away after a battle with liver cancer,” reports the Irish Daily Mirror.
Local councillor Micheal Connolly says it was a big blow to the community and both men were very popular.
He adds that Peters wife also passed away a few years ago, so it has been a tough time for the family.
“I was up at their house on Saturday night and it was a tough one, there was a lot of people there,”
“It was a big blow to the family, I know them very, very well, and I know the nephews and grand-children and they are all lovely people.
“It’s awful when the two of them die like this so close together. Peter lived a very full life, but Thomas’ cancer was rapid.
“It’s very rare when a father and son will die in these circumstances, and you don’t normally see a family funeral like that so it’s hard to get your head around,” he told the paper.
