When a new diet fad comes out, we're all keen to know what it's about and if it will actually help you lose weight.

The latest trend is the 16:8 diet, or Eight Hour Diet, which stars like c said to be fans of.

But what is it? The diet involves eating three meals at three set times and fasting.

From 10am to 6pm, you are able to eat - 8 hours in the day. The rest of the day - 16 hours - you are to fast.

Those who follow the diet have their breakfast at 10am, their lunch at 2pm and dinner at 6pm.

What you eat isn't said but they suggest you eat good quality lean meats and plenty of eggs.

Australian holistic nutritionist and wellness guru, Lee Holmes, told the MailOnline's Femail that many people may already follow this diet and not even realise it.

She said: "You’ve been following one of the hottest diets around at the moment and you didn’t even know it.

"If you delay your overnight fasting time for just a few more hours, you can easily fit right into the very trendy and extremely sustainable 'Eight Hour Diet.'

"By practising fasting, you allow your body and gut time to digest, real and heal. Fasting actually lightens the load on the guy, allowing it to work at its optimum. It also improves the cleansing process."

But is it good for you? Lee admitted that while the diet may not come easy to those who like to indulge and eat snacks, starving your body for too long can have a negative effect. However, it's not all bad.

She explained: "It can send a signal to the body that it’s experiencing famine and triggers the body to shut down fertility.

"But if you satisfy your body with quality saturated fats throughout the day, like eggs and good fats (which are only around 40 calories for a teaspoon), the body will know it’s in a safe environment and will continue with proper hormone synthesis."
