One To Watch: Makeup Artist Ashley O’Rourke
This week’s One to Watch goes to the fabulous Ashley O’Rourke – a talented Makeup Artist who wishes she could bring her beloved pooch Mylo with her to work every day. RSVP’s Susan caught up with Ashley to talk all things makeup, careers and the future.
Hi Ashley! Firstly, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m 30 years old. I’ve been working in the makeup industry the last 12 years. I got married last year and live in Howth Village with my Husband Phil and our dog Mylo.
Did you always know that you wanted to pursue a career in makeup artistry?
I always knew that I wanted to be a makeup artist, for as long as I can remember. When I told my Mam she suggested maybe doing it as a side line thing as she didn’t think it would be reliable but I was determined to make it my career.
Where do you get your inspiration for looks from?
I’m always online looking up lots of different things that inspire me but on a job I work with the client, whether that be a Bride or a on a shoot, the person that I’m working on inspires me.
What has been your biggest achievement to date?
I think my biggest achievement is doing what I set out to do all those years ago, working at something that I’m really passionate about.
If you could makeover any celebrity, who would it be and why?
Beyoncé – Because I just love everything about her I think she’s beautiful and amazing at what she does!
What is your favourite thing about your chosen career?
You know the saying “if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life” that’s exactly how I feel about what I do.
Is there anything you would change about your job if you had a chance to?
That I’d be able to bring Mylo (My Dog) to every job!
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Being able to make someone feel good about themselves.
Do you have any advice for someone starting out who wants to pursue makeup as a living?
Get as much practical experience as possible. I learned the most from assisting people it does mean working for free a lot of the time but it’s worth it.
What would you say is your favourite makeup brand and why?
It’s hard to single out just one brand as there are so many that I love but Make Up For Ever is definitely one of them And Charlotte Tilbury, for both ,the reason being that their products do what they say they’re going to do.
Do you have any top makeup tips you can share with us?
Less is definitely more!!!
If you weren’t a makeup artist, what do you think you’d be doing instead now?
Maybe something to do with houses, I’m always on daft even though we’re not moving house! I just love looking at people’s houses and what they do with them so maybe something to do with that.
Where do you hope to see yourself in five years from now?
I don’t really think of where I’ll be 5 years from now. I think what’s important is now and the rest will take care of itself.
