Student dies from meningitis at University College Cork

A student has died at University College Cork from meningitis.

According to the Irish Independent, the helpline of the Meningitis Research Foundation saw a huge surge in calls for information following the death.

They told the publication their thoughts were with the family involved saying:

“We would like to offer our sincere condolences to her family and friends; our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.”

It is not known what strain of meningitis was involved, however meningitis can be extremely dangerous as it develops so quickly and its symptoms can mimic everyday illnesses like the flu or even a hangover.

The Meningitis Research Foundation added:

“We want to make the public aware of the symptoms of meningitis so if anyone would like any further information or feels that they could benefit from talking to someone please call our Dublin office on: 01 819 6931, our Freefone Helpline on: 1800 41 33 44 or visit our web site”
