WHEELS AND HEELS: Tips the ensure your car is winter ready

The number of Irish motorists experiencing breakdowns has risen 5% year on year, according to the experts at AA. This is more likely to happen as the colder weather sets in, so it’s important to ensure your car is winter ready.

(1) Check your battery

This is the most common cause of winter breakdowns. Cold and damp weather can kill a battery especially if it is more than five years old. Have your mechanic check for sufficient voltage, replace or repair if necessary.

(2) Fuel Levels

Always ensure you have at least a quarter tank of fuel in your car in case you encounter unexpected delays.

(3) Tyres

Driving on unsafe, worn or defective tyres is now an offence that carries both a fine and penalty points. Check tread depth (should be at least 1.6mm), check pressure and consider changing to winter tyres for improved safety.

(4) Check your windscreen

The low winter sun can be blinding, so reduce this by ensuring your windscreen is clean both inside and out! Also, now might be a good time to replace old or worn wiper blades before the heavy rain really sets in.

(5) Check your lights

During the winter months driving with lights on is essential nearly every hour of the day. Check that all bulbs are working correctly so that you can be seen clearly in any kind of weather.

Keep a few key items in your boot in case of emergency or unexpected delays: antifreeze, a torch, a blanket, a bottle of water, snacks and an in-car phone charger.

CAR OF THE MONTH – Nissan Qashqai

Winner of the WhatCar Car of the Year title in 2014, and a great all-rounder, it’s no wonder the Nissan Qashqai is one of the best selling cars on the market at the moment. While the original Qashqai broke the mould of the typical family car, this latest model has evolved even further. Boasting a comfortable and controlled ride and with an updated interior, these few small changes mean the Qashqai has become even more versatile and practical than before.

While not everyone would consider Nissan to be a premium brand, you couldn’t tell that from sitting inside the cabin. A sophisticated dashboard full of easy-to-use buttons and a 5” Advance Drive-Assist Display all operate consistently well. The Qashqai SV’s kit is suitably generous also with cruise control, bluetooth, air con, a leather multifunction steering wheel, 17” alloy wheels and a panoramic glass roof all coming as standard.

It’s the perfect family car! Reasonably priced, a good sized boot and more than enough room in the back for three adults, or children and all of their paraphernalia.

Safety is always a hugely important factor when looking to buy a family car. However, there is no need to worry, the Qashqai lives up to the high safety levels expected by Nissan customers, by receiving the maximum 5-star Euro NCAP rating. As well as having plenty of safety kit included as standard – six airbags, stability control and emergency brake assist – the Nissan Qashqai combines premium refinement, great driving dynamics and an upmarket interior to ensure it stays at the top of its class.

With standard prices starting at €26,620, you can drive away in a brand new Qashqai for only €293 a month!
