Women in Business: Sonia Flynn, Co-founder of Roller

In this weeks Women in Business, Sonia Flynn fills us in on the success behind her company, Roller.

Where it all began

My business partner Orna and I had been talking for months about the need for a blow dry bar in the Dublin Docklands area and couldn’t figure out why no one had jumped on the idea. Fast forward to middle of last year when we found the right location on Forbes Street, we decided that we would do it ourselves! Despite the hectic schedules we both have, it’s happily all worked out.

The biggest challenge to date

Getting the right location was crucial but also spending time to figure out what we wanted Roller to to stand for. Both Orna and I have busy day jobs (at Stripe and SoundCloud) and we certainly had plenty of curve balls thrown our way, so figuring out who could take on what was key.

Where my motivation stems from

Having worked in tech for many years, I’ve always wanted a bricks and mortar business.  Both Orna and I have a strong work ethic and are never happy standing still.

The best business advice I can offer is

Having the right team in place is so important and surrounding yourself with people who have set up their own business (ideally in the same industry) and can offer advice about the industry is massively important. Once open for business, it’s clear that you can do as much research as you like in advance but it’s key to listen to what your clients are saying and act on that feedback.

The biggest challenge my business is facing

Right now, it’s continuing to spread the word about Roller and our commitment to offer speedy blow dry brilliance in the tech hub of Dublin.

If I was Minister for Enterprise I would…

Set up more support for mums who want to get back to work but either cannot afford to do so because of childcare costs or because they’d like to do something part time and have flexibility. There is a massive source of talent untapped because we don’t do enough to lend support.

What I love most about my work

The people, both at Roller and at SoundCloud, I’m surrounded by people who have massive passion for what they do.
